Friends of Federation Walk acknowledge the aim of the State Government to rejuvenate and protect ‘Federation Walk’ (included in ‘Parkland Community Consultation Area’)
Friends of Federation Walk have been actively restoring the reserve since 1999 in partnership with the City of Gold Coast.
The Federation Walk project received grant funding in 1999 of $75,000 from the Queensland Centenary of Federation and created a draft ‘Federation Walk Management Plan’ to provide a blueprint of how this sensitive coastal area be managed and developed. Friends of Federation Walk Incorporated is the community group specific to ‘Federation Walk’ Seaworld Drive The Spit to appreciate, care for and maintain this area for the benefit of the community.
The State Government’s commitment to annual funding of $100,000 in 2006, matched annually by the Gold Coast City Council of $100,000, with additional support of $30,000 from Division 7.
In 2012 the State Government funding was withdrawn.
The Trustee for this Reserve is the City of Gold Coast.
This Reserve was gazetted in 2003 for Park, Environmental, Beach Protection and Coastal Management purposes; it is dedicated as trust land under the Land Act 1994 for Community Purposes. These are:
Environmental Purposes: Where a parcel of land contains a particular type of flora or fauna or geological occurrence and warrants protection, but the size of the area and/or the relative scale or extent of the attribute is not sufficient to establish and manage as a separate national park or other conservation tenure.
Beach Protection: To be used for the protection of natural coastal landforms and coastal processes, including erosion and accretion of beaches and dunes and the protection of native vegetation which stabilises dunes against wind erosion.
Coastal Management: Coastal management includes the protection, conservation, rehabilitation and management of coastal resources as defined in the Coastal Protection and Management Act 1995.
Environmental purposes: Where a parcel of land contains a particular type of flora or fauna or geological occurrence and warrants protection, but the size of the area and/or the relative scale or extent of the attribute is not sufficient to establish and manage as a separate national park or other conservation tenure.
Parks: To be used for low-key recreational uses (e.g. picnics, small children’s playground, park bench).
